You can use the link command to create a pointer to an existing file. When you do this, you aren t actually creating a new file as such; you are creating a virtual copy of the original by pointing a new filename to an existing file. You use symbolic links when you want to conveniently refer to files from a different directory, without having to provide their complete path. There are two types of links: hard links and symbolic links. You can create hard links between files in the same directory, whereas

you can create symbolic links for any file residing in any directory. The previous example shows a symbolic link. The LONG types date back to version 6 of Oracle, when they were limited to 64KB of data.
